Castles, museums and culture on Ischia

Culture listings centre on Castello Aragonese and Borgo di Celsa in Ischia Ponte, the Archaeological Museum of Pithecusae in Lacco Ameno, and pottery workshops. The castle is a historic complex on its own islet, not a quick viewpoint attached to Ischia Porto.

Good to know: Guided castle walks and entrance-only products are different purchases, so check whether admission is included. Pithecusae is across the island in Lacco Ameno. Pottery workshops are hands-on sessions rather than sightseeing and need more fixed time than an independent museum visit.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ischia best known for?

For thermal parks, Castello Aragonese, beaches and coves, and its volcanic landscape around Monte Epomeo. In the current bookable inventory, island boat tours are the largest group; thermal tickets and island drives are also prominent.

Can I reach Ischia by car or train?

No road or railway reaches the island. Ferries and hydrofoils arrive at Ischia Porto, Casamicciola and, on some services, Forio. Vehicle-carrying ferries and passenger-only hydrofoils use different Naples piers, so check the operator timetable.

How long is the crossing from Naples?

Current services from Naples Beverello commonly take about 50–65 minutes by hydrofoil. Conventional ferries from Porta di Massa take roughly 90–120 minutes, depending on the sailing and any Procida stop. Timetables change seasonally.

Is Procida or Capri the easier day trip?

Procida is much closer and therefore the easier day from Ischia. Capri requires a longer crossing and more of the day in transit. Both are bookable, but the ferry may be better than a tour if you mainly want independent time ashore.

Does every boat tour leave from Ischia Porto?

No. Departures also use Forio, Casamicciola and Sant’Angelo. Check the meeting point before booking: crossing the island by road can take time, especially in summer traffic.

Is Ischia a good base for Pompeii and Vesuvius?

It is possible but not efficient. You must cross to the mainland in both directions before adding the onward journey. Naples or the Sorrento area is a more practical base; schedule those sights before or after Ischia if possible.
