Monte Epomeo Hike: How to Reach Ischia’s Summit
Updated October 25, 2026 · 5 min read
For most visitors, Fontana is the practical starting point for walking up Monte Epomeo. The summit is Ischia’s highest point at 789 metres, but this is not a technical mountaineering objective. It is a steep island walk on uneven surfaces, with sun, loose ground and weather exposure doing more to shape the day than the altitude alone.
Starting from Fontana
Reach Fontana by the island bus network, then follow current local signs towards Monte Epomeo. Do not rely on a single old track recording: paths and access details can change, while phone reception and map accuracy are not reasons to ignore signs on the ground. Download a map before leaving and ask locally if the route is unclear.
The upper section includes rock, worn steps and gradients. Walking shoes with grip are a sensible minimum. Carry water and sun protection; in warmer months, an earlier start avoids the harshest heat. Cloud, rain or strong wind can remove the view and make rock slippery, so turning back can be the better decision.
How much time to allow
Your pace depends on where in Fontana you begin, stops and conditions. Allow a generous half day rather than squeezing the summit between a late lunch and a fixed ferry. The reward is not only the final viewpoint: chestnut woods, Mediterranean vegetation and changing views are part of the ascent.
Near the top, the landscape becomes more exposed. Keep enough energy and daylight for the descent; reaching the summit is only half the walk.
Who should reconsider
This is a poor choice on a very hot afternoon, in unstable weather, or for anyone whose footwear is suited only to town streets. The route is not an accessibility promise. Travellers with limited mobility should seek current local advice about surfaces and access rather than assume that a famous viewpoint has step-free provision.
Families should judge the actual walking ability of each child and keep the option to turn around. Do not invent a universal minimum age: the relevant questions are heat, grip, stamina and whether the child follows instructions near exposed ground.
Hike or island tour?
Choose Monte Epomeo for effort, landscape and a single strong objective. Choose an Ischia island tour if you want to connect several towns without a steep walk. They answer different questions, and doing both on the same rushed day weakens each.
Check the weather shortly before setting out, take the marked route from Fontana and keep the schedule flexible. On a clear, mild day, the walk is one of the best ways to understand Ischia as a volcanic island rather than simply a chain of coastal resorts.
